Technical Seminar on Revision of Poverty Indicators and Measures
On Tuesday 20 September 2005 the Office for Social Inclusion hosted a technical seminar to inform and consult with stakeholders on the revision of poverty indicators and measures. This work forms part of OSI’s data strategy and is being done to ensure that the methodology used in measuring poverty is up to date and provides an accurate picture of deprivation and social exclusion in Ireland. The seminar featured speakers from the European Commission, who provided an update on the use of indicators at EU level, including deprivation indicators, and from the UK, who described the development and operation of the UK tiered approach to measuring child poverty. The keynote contribution was from the Economic and Social Research Institute. The ESRI presented the results of recent work on the revision of national measures and indicators and examined the possibility of using the tiered approach to poverty measurement. The seminar concluded with a panel discussion with representatives from the following organisations making a contribution: the Central Statistics Office, the Combat Poverty Agency, the Irish Business and Employers Confederation and from the Community and Voluntary Pillar – Age Action Ireland. OSI would now like to give interested parties the opportunity to make any comments or observations on the issue of the revision of the existing poverty measures and indicators, which will assist OSI in developing proposals for Government on this important issue. You can forward your observations or comments to the following address: [email protected] Further information on this issue can be found in the Background Note for the technical seminar.
